Driving value and prosperity through advocacy and growth
The Halifax Chamber of Commerce traces its origins back to 1750 and has been the resounding voice of the local business community for 250 years, tirelessly promoting member success and the conditions to enhance private sector growth. A non-partisan, not for profit, membership-based organization, the Chamber is renowned for offering high-impact events, services and programs, with a clear vision of amplifying member voices and influencing policy to deliver value and prosperity for members.
As businesses navigate an increasingly complex environment, the Chamber is seeking a visionary and collaborative President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the organization and its 2,000 members confidently into the future.
Reporting to the Board through the Chair, the CEO will step into this exciting leadership role to elevate the Chamber’s voice, value, and impact. Building from a strong foundation, they will be responsible for growing and strengthening the member value proposition, ensuring the Chamber continues to innovate and deliver the advocacy and services that matter most to its members and the Halifax business community.
Working closely with a talented team and Board, the CEO will lead the review, implementation, and execution of a multi-year strategic plan to increase the number of members and steward member retention, engagement, and long-term growth. A visible leader, they will prioritize understanding of members’ shifting needs, the delivery of relevant events, programs and services, and advocacy of key issues affecting members' growth and prosperity.
The ideal candidate has at least 10 years of senior level leadership experience, preferably spent in member-driven, business, not for profit or government organizations. They possess solid business acumen and a clear understanding of the needs and dynamics of small and medium enterprises, large corporations and not for profits. A relationship builder and skilled communicator, they bring experience navigating complex, multi-constituent environments with ease, excelling in government relations and policy advocacy. Their political astuteness and diplomacy make them a trusted voice.
The CEO has exceptional public speaking skills, highly adept at effectively engaging with media, government officials, and large audiences. They are well-versed in effectively working with boards and are an inclusive and trusted team leader to staff and volunteers. They ideally have a post-secondary degree in business, communications, public administration, or a related field, and bring sound financial acumen to their role. Lastly, the successful candidate is known for their growth mindset and has the energy and passion to take the Chamber to the next level.
